User Guide for Online Multi-line Text Find and Replace Site
Welcome! This guide will show you how to use this simple and powerful online tool to find and replace text, even when it spans multiple lines.
Core Principles Before You Start
For the most accurate results, please remember these two key principles:
- Case-Sensitive Search
The search function distinguishes between uppercase and lowercase letters. For example, a search for Text
will not match text
. Please ensure the capitalization in the Find: box is exact.
- Literal Matching (What You See Is What You Get)
This tool finds and replaces exactly what you see in the input boxes. There are no special commands or escape characters.
- Line Breaks: To find or insert a line break, simply press the Enter key.
- Special Characters: If you want to find the literal characters
\\n
, just type \\
followed by n
into the input box.
How to Use (Step-by-Step)
- Enter Your Text: Paste the entire text you wish to edit into the Text to Edit: area.
- If the text is too long and creates a horizontal scrollbar, you can check the Wrap text box in the top-right corner for easier reading.
- Enter Text to Find: Type the exact text you want to find into the Find: box. If the text spans multiple lines, include the line breaks by pressing Enter.
- Enter Replacement Text: Type the text you want to use as the replacement into the Replace with: box. This can also be multiple lines.
- Choose an Action: Click the button that corresponds to the action you want to take.
Button Functions
- Replace All: The primary blue button. It finds every occurrence that matches the Find: text and replaces it with the Replace with: text in one go.
- Replace: Replaces only the very first match it finds in the document.
- Undo: Reverts the last "Replace" or "Replace All" action you performed, restoring your text to its previous state. This button is disabled if there are no actions to undo.
- Clear All: The orange button. It erases all content from the Text to Edit:, Find:, and Replace with: boxes, allowing you to start fresh.
Practical Examples
Example 1: Changing a Multi-line Address
Assume your Text to Edit: box contains:
Our office is at:
123 Sample St.
Seoul, South Korea
In the Find: box, you would enter:
123 Sample St.
Seoul, South Korea
In the Replace with: box, you would enter the new address:
456 Test Ave.
New York, USA
Clicking Replace All will seamlessly update the entire address block.
Example 2: Finding the Literal Characters \\n
Assume your Text to Edit: box contains the sentence: The command for a newline is \\n.
To find and replace this, you would simply type the literal characters \\n
into the Find: box.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q: Why isn't the tool finding my text?
- A: The most common reason is a case-sensitive mismatch. Please double-check that the capitalization in the Find: box is identical to the source text. Also, look for any unintentional spaces at the beginning or end of your search term.
- Q: How do I find or insert a blank line?
- A: Simply press the Enter key in the Find: or Replace with: box. To find a blank line between two lines of text (two line breaks), press Enter twice.
- Q: What does the Wrap text checkbox do?
- A: It's a convenience feature. When checked, it automatically wraps long lines of text in the Text to Edit: box so you don't have to scroll horizontally to read them.
- Q: Is my data safe?
- A: Yes. The text you enter is used only for the find-and-replace operation within your browser session. It is not stored on our servers.
